LU YU / Teapot

When Taiwan had an agricultural-based economy in earlier years, farmers usually walked and delivered agricultural products to urban areas in harvest seasons. As the delivery usually took half a day’s trip, the replenishment of water along the way became extremely essential. Villagers who sympathized with those assiduous workers usually placed a teapot of tea outside their homes or along the roadside of tiny mountain trails for workers who passed by to take a break before continuing their treks. With nothing about normal tea leaves and water in the teapot, this gesture, however, symbolized the reciprocal connectedness between people. The shape of the teapot designed by GoGOLDFISH Design Studio was inspired by the transitional large-sized aluminium teapot. The body of the teapot was manufactured in the Yingge Kiln Studio. Utilizing the principle of leverage and allowing the center of gravity to slide in line with the tea pouring gesture, the teapot’s rounded shape makes tea pouring more effortless. The streamlined metal teapot lid and handle in combination with the exquisite and delicate texture of white porcelain exemplify the spirit and essence of the tea ceremony, which is a fusion of strength and gentleness. When the air slowly becomes overflowing with the aroma of tea, what is even more meaningful and thought-provoking are stories behind the tea on top of relishing its flavor. While savouring the tea with a mixture of bitter and sweet tastes, one apparently has a taste of humans unspoken codes of conduct and begins to ponder over the deep-rooted warm hospitality in Taiwan.
